Why a Scavenger Hunt?
Kids love a good challenge, and I’ve found that turning a task into a game keeps them engaged and excited. A scavenger hunt taps into their natural curiosity and makes finding school supplies a lot more fun than simply buying them.
Plus, it’s a great way to spend quality time together as we prepare for the new school year.

How It Works
The scavenger hunt can be done around the house, in the backyard, or even at a local park. I hide 18 different items related to school, and the kids have to find them. Each item is something they’ll need or will remind them of what’s to come in the new school year. You can make it as easy or as challenging as you like, depending on the age of your kids.
The 18 Scavenger Hunt Items

Here are the 18 items I included in this scavenger hunt:
- Pencil: This one’s a no-brainer. I like to hide a fun, colorful pencil as a reminder that it’s time to sharpen those writing skills.
- Eraser: Because mistakes happen, and it’s okay to start fresh.
- Notebook: A new notebook is like a blank canvas for their ideas and creativity.
- Ruler: Useful for math, science, and art, a ruler is essential for measuring progress.
- Backpack: I hide this one last, so they can collect all the other items and pack them inside.
- Lunchbox: Finding this is a fun reminder that school lunches can be a highlight of the day.
- Crayons: I love seeing their faces light up when they find a box of crayons – it’s a colorful reminder of the creative projects ahead.
- Glue Stick: Perfect for art projects and sticking to their goals.
- Book: Whether it’s a new story or an old favorite, a book is essential for sparking imagination.
- Calculator: This one’s a nod to all the math challenges they’ll conquer this year. And if your child loves problem-solving, check out the Back-to-School Activity Bundle for some fun math games and puzzles.
KC Products
- Scissors: I usually hide these in a safe spot, like on a high shelf, as a reminder of all the creative cutting and crafting they’ll do.
- School Bus Picture: This could be a drawing or a toy bus, reminding them of the daily ride to school.
- Highlighter: Great for marking important points, just like the moments they’ll want to remember from their school year. Use our Back-to-School Questionnaire to record these memories and look back on them in years to come.
- Paperclip: A small but mighty tool for keeping things organized.
- Whiteboard Marker: Useful for school or home, a whiteboard marker is a symbol of interactive learning.
- Flashcard: These can be made for any subject, helping with quick review sessions.
- Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is essential, so a new water bottle is both a practical and fun find.
- School Mascot or Logo Item: Whether it’s a mini flag, sticker, or keychain, this item boosts school spirit and gets them excited to be part of their school community.
