How to Set Up the Scavenger Hunt

A child colors in an egg carton section with a green marker on a tablecloth-covered surface. Various colored markers and a partially visible design are also present.
  1. Prepare the Egg Carton: Choose whether you’ll use crayons, markers, or paint to color the compartments of the egg carton. I opted for crayons and markers since I didn’t have any paint on hand. Keep in mind that paint offers more vibrant and varied colors, so if you have the time and materials, consider letting your child paint the carton.
  2. Get Creative with Colors: This can also double as an educational activity! If you’re using paint, let your child mix colors to see how new shades are created. If you’re short on time, simply use crayons or markers to color each compartment. I decided to color two compartments with the same color since I had fewer materials.
  3. Start the Scavenger Hunt: Once your egg carton is ready, let your child explore the outdoors. Encourage them to find items that match each color in the compartments—wildflowers, grass, leaves, rocks, or anything else that catches their eye!

Our Experience

A child holds a recycled egg carton filled with various collected items from an egg carton scavenger hunt, including rocks, flowers, and a paintbrush, along with colorful paint in some of the egg compartments.

My son had so much fun running around our front and backyard, searching for the “perfect” color matches. When he couldn’t find an exact match for a few colors outside, he got creative and started looking indoors for objects to complete his scavenger hunt. I loved seeing him improvise and think outside the box!

FAQs about the Egg Carton Scavenger Hunt

Two used egg cartons placed on the grass, one of which is painted in various colors while the other remains unpainted.
Can I use a different container if I don’t have an egg carton?

Absolutely! You can use any small container with compartments, like a muffin tin or a divided snack tray. Just make sure it has enough sections to color and match with items your child can find.

What if my child is too young to understand color matching?

No problem! For younger toddlers, you can simplify the activity by focusing on finding specific objects, like leaves or rocks, instead of matching colors. It’s a great way to introduce them to nature and different textures.

How can I make the scavenger hunt more challenging for older kids?

For older children, consider adding additional challenges like finding specific types of plants, textures (e.g., smooth, rough), or shapes. You can also set a timer to add a fun, competitive element.

Is this activity safe for all weather conditions?

While this activity is best enjoyed outdoors in pleasant weather, you can easily adapt it for indoor play on rainy or cold days. Your child can search for color matches among their toys, clothes, or other household items.

Can we reuse the egg carton for future activities?

Yes! After the scavenger hunt, you can repurpose the egg carton for other creative activities, like organizing small toys, as a paint palette, or even for another scavenger hunt on a different day.
