Minimalist Baby Essentials: What You Actually Need for Your Newborn
New mum? First baby? Feeling overwhelmed with everything baby-related out there? Been there, done that. In this complete minimalist baby essentials guide, I’m sharing exactly what you really need for your newborn in the first 3 months – no unnecessary extras, just the true essentials.
We all know that a tiny little baby doesn’t need a lot of stuff, but because we are women and like shopping, especially if it’s the first pregnancy, most of us tend to overdo it. When you’re on a budget and/or don’t have the space for mountains of baby gear, it’s crucial to know which minimalist baby essentials truly deserve a spot on your registry.
From the beginning, I wanted to shop smart and not overspend on baby stuff – well, at least I tried to… But because I am who I am and love shopping, I went a bit over budget. Believe it or not, many things were purchased and barely used or not used at all. That’s why I created this minimalist baby essentials checklist based on my real-world experience.
🎁 Bonus! This minimalist baby essentials checklist is available as a FREE printable in my Pregnancy, Baby & Postpartum Vault, along with other essential resources like hospital bag checklists, postpartum recovery guides, and newborn care tips to help you prepare for your new arrival with confidence. Essential Nursery Items for Minimalist Parents

Let’s start with the nursery essentials, shall we? These are the true minimalist baby essentials you might need for your baby’s sleeping space.
We didn’t arrange to have a separate nursery for our baby, mainly because we were moving at the time and figured that he’d be sleeping with us for the first 6 months anyway. In my opinion, I found it pointless to start decorating or even think about a nursery at that stage.
I’m perfectly aware that many mums-to-be prepare their baby’s room months before they’re even born. There’s a whole trend developing around this, and maybe I would have liked to prepare one as well, but we just didn’t have much of a choice given that we were moving.
Minimalist Sleep Solutions
For minimalist baby sleeping essentials, you’ll need:
- A crib – we had one from Waldin (not available anymore)
- Mattress
- 2-3 sheets
- Mattress liners
One of the many reasons we chose that crib is because we could connect it to our own bed. If I’m completely honest with you, we barely used it because our little one hasn’t slept in it during the night. We used to use it as protection, so the baby wouldn’t fall out and for his toy mobile, which by the way, he used to adore.

Space-Saving Changing Options
For changing essentials, consider a simple changing mat rather than a full changing station if you’re tight on space or budget. This is totally optional in my case because you could change your baby’s nappy or clothes literally anywhere.
Because of our moving situation, we decided on a changing mat. It’s way more affordable, plus you can put it on any table you want, or move it around your house.
Only Baby Clothes You Actually Need
For a truly minimalist baby wardrobe, focus on these essentials:
- 6-8 vests/onesies
- 6-8 sleepsuits
- 2-3 hats
- 4-5 pairs of socks
- 2-3 warm clothes options
- 1 jacket or outerwear for going out
You won’t need anything else really. But who can avoid buying more clothes than your baby needs when there are so many cute options everywhere? I have to recognize that I went a little overboard with his clothes, but I simply couldn’t resist, they are too cute!
Essential Bedding and Linens
For your minimalist baby essentials list, include:
- 2-3 swaddle blankets
- 2 regular blankets
- 6-8 muslin/burp cloths
You can use these while in the hospital or home, for your stroller, for whatever you want really. These are extremely useful and believe it or not, you never have enough. Etsy is full of cool blankets for babies.

Minimalist Baby Feeding Essentials

If you’ve decided to exclusively breastfeed your baby, your minimalist baby essentials for feeding are minimal. However, many women choose to both breastfeed and bottle-feed their baby with expressed breast milk.
Breastfeeding Essentials
If you’re planning to breastfeed, consider these minimalist essentials:
- Breast pads (absolute must-have!)
- Nipple cream – I used the Lansinoh Nipple Cream
- 1-2 nursing bras
Breast pads are a godsend and will be extremely helpful especially in those first 3 months until your milk supply starts to regulate.
Pumping and Bottle Feeding
If you’ll be pumping or formula feeding, add these to your minimalist baby registry:
- Breast pump (I used to have a Medala pump, but I’m pretty sure, there are lots of other options out there)
- 3-4 baby bottles
- Milk storage bags
- Dribble bibs (optional)
If you’ve decided to exclusively bottle-feed your baby, besides baby bottles, you will need the baby formula milk of your choice.

Essential Baby Care Items Every New Parent Needs

These baby care essentials focus on health monitoring and basic care needs during the first three months.
Health Monitoring Essentials
The most important item in your minimalist baby essentials kit is a baby thermometer.
Fever can be extremely dangerous for babies, so you need a reliable way to monitor temperature at all times. The market has quite a variety of them, and I recommend finding the one that works best for you and your baby. You can also use the no-touch thermometer, which gives you instant temperature.
We have 2 digital thermometers:
- One for the armpit area or rectal use (we never used it rectally)
- One for ear temperature readings (my personal preference)
Nasal and Oral Care
To maintain your baby’s comfort, these minimalist essentials are worth including:
- Physiological serum for cleaning the baby’s nose, eyes, and ears (essentially sterile water)
- Nasal aspirator
For nasal care, I started with a regular hand pump but didn’t like it at all. My baby was always crying and it wasn’t efficient. That’s when we switched to an electric nasal aspirator. Since day one of using it, it was a total game changer: baby loved it, no crying, and he had a clean nose.

Grooming Essentials
For basic grooming needs:
- Baby nail scissors or clippers
In case you didn’t know, babies’ nails grow very fast, so you’ll need baby scissors or nail clippers to prevent them from scratching themselves, especially in those first weeks. We have this baby care kit.
Special Care Products
Not essential for everyone, but worth mentioning: After about a month, my son developed cradle cap. This amazing cream helped get rid of it. I highly recommend it if your baby develops cradle cap, though not all babies do.
Bath Time Essentials for Newborns

Before diving into bath essentials, let me share a quick lesson learned. Before my baby was born, I bought numerous baby toiletries like shampoo, shower gel, and baby cream. I mistakenly thought he would need all these products.
When he had his first bath, I started using them all. Big mistake! The next day, my baby’s sensitive skin reacted with a rash. I stopped using them and switched to just gentle baby soap.
The lesson: Be very careful about which products you use on your baby’s delicate skin! Even though products may be marketed for babies, many contain harsh ingredients. A safe option, recommended by pediatricians, is the Bioderma ABCDerm Foaming Gel for babies.
Minimalist Bath Essentials
For a minimalist approach to bath time, you’ll need:
- 2-3 baby towels with hoods
- A baby bathtub or an alternative would be a bath support which is more versatile and can be used in your sink or tub as you wish.
You can even use your kitchen sink if it’s large enough. We bought this baby bathtub and initially, I thought it was brilliant because it would grow with my baby. Months later, I completely changed my mind. My little one became too active during bath times and nearly fell out of the tub.
Gentle Cleansing Products
For true minimalist baby essentials, stick with:
- Simple baby soap
- Bioderma ABCDerm Foaming Gel
It’s really effective, washes well, and is budget-friendly—always a bonus for minimalist parents, right?

Diapering Essentials for Your Minimalist Baby Registry

This category is straightforward but necessary for your minimalist baby essentials list.
You’ll need:
- Diapers (start with newborn size)
- Diaper cream or coconut oil – depending on what works for your baby. For us, Sudocrem worked best in all rashes.
- Baby wipes – I highly recommend Water Wipes because of its clean ingredients. I even had a recurring subscription, just to make sure I wouldn’t run out of them.
Wipes can get expensive over time. If you’re on a very tight budget, you can always use a soft cloth or cotton pads with warm water. That’s what I used in the hospital when I ran out of wipes. If you’re interested in seeing what else I packed for the hospital, check it out here.

Baby Transportation Essentials for the First 3 Months

For safely taking your baby outside the home, these minimalist transportation essentials are non-negotiable.
Car Safety
You might already know this, but a car seat is absolutely essential. In some countries, you cannot leave the hospital with your baby unless you have a car seat. (Which seems odd—what if you don’t own a car?). We had a car seat from Joie which has been with us from birth to 7 years old.
Stroller Options
Another baby essential for us was a stroller. Your choice depends on how you prefer to carry your baby around. We chose a 3-in-1 travel system for maximum versatility while maintaining a minimalist approach. Check out the 5 Things You Should Know before Buying a Stroller which is a great guide for any mom.
Babywearing
Not necessarily on every minimalist baby essentials list, but I loved babywearing. If this interests you, consider an ergonomic carrier like this one from Ergobaby. The ergonomic design is crucial for your baby’s health and development.
I loved having my baby close to me and knew it was the safest place for him, but due to back problems, I couldn’t wear him as much as I wanted to.
Other Minimalist Baby Must-Haves

There are a few additional items that deserve a spot on your minimalist baby essentials checklist.
Baby-Safe Laundry Solutions
An often-overlooked essential is baby-specific detergent for washing your little one’s clothes. In my experience, you shouldn’t wash your baby’s clothes with your own, especially in those first 6 weeks.
Maybe this is just another old wives’ tale, but I followed that unwritten rule. We initially used baby soap to wash his clothes, but after a while (when he actually had enough laundry), we switched to Bollicine organic baby laundry liquid for the washing machine. I loved it because my baby’s sensitive skin had no reaction to it.
FAQs About Minimalist Baby Essentials

-
How much should I budget for minimalist baby essentials?
For truly essential items only, expect to spend $300-600 for the first 3 months. This includes basics like a car seat, some clothes, diapers, and feeding supplies. Remember, you can often find great deals on gently used items!
-
Can I really get by with so few baby clothes?
Absolutely! Babies grow so quickly in the first few months that they’ll outgrow clothes before you can use everything. Start with 6-8 of each essential item and buy more only as needed.
-
What’s the difference between minimalist and regular baby registries?
A minimalist baby registry focuses on multi-functional, essential items only. Instead of having 15 different baby gadgets, you choose versatile basics that truly serve a purpose in your daily routine.
-
Is it safe to have fewer baby items?
Yes! Having fewer items doesn’t mean compromising on safety. The key is choosing high-quality essentials like a good car seat, safe sleep products, and reliable health monitoring tools like a thermometer.
-
When should I buy additional baby items?
Wait and see what you actually need after baby arrives. Many “must-have” items turn out to be unnecessary, while you might discover specific needs unique to your baby’s preferences.
