Safe skincare during pregnancy is very important for both you and your baby. That’s because you want to have a healthy and well-developed baby.
This means that you should avoid harsh chemicals and bad ingredients at all costs! I am not sure whether you knew it or not, but there are a lot of ingredients in our daily cosmetics that are bad for us. These become even more dangerous once we get pregnant.
In my opinion, pregnancy is a very exciting yet challenging time, especially if you are experiencing skin issues.
Before we jump into this article, let me tell you a massive “congratulations” on your pregnancy! Being a mum is definitely something amazing. Although for some of us, pregnancy can be more challenging, especially those first few weeks.
Why do you need to use safe skincare during pregnancy?
In case you didn’t know while you are breastfeeding you still need to avoid those harsh chemicals from cosmetics. You also need to be careful with your diet and what you eat. The reason is simple: everything you eat and use on your body, face, and hair, gets into your system and therefore will be filtered into your baby’s milk.
Since I found out I was pregnant I knew that I wanted to change my skincare routine and switch over to safe products during pregnancy.
That’s when my research began. I was scanning the web every day for articles that would give me more information about what I should or shouldn’t use during my pregnancy. What ingredients to avoid and a list of pregnancy skincare products that are safe.
I looked for the dangerous and harsh chemicals that could have an impact on a pregnancy. I learned that using any of these products that contain these ingredients could potentially affect your baby’s normal growth and development.
Intoxication, birth problems, and death are other problems that can be caused if you are not careful with toxic products. I was aware of the problems that these can cause so I wanted to be cautious.

During this research of mine, all I could find were magazine articles that were covering mostly high-end brands, nothing for a tight budget like mine.
Unfortunately, I didn’t find what I was looking for. I wanted clean ingredients and an acceptable price range. I wouldn’t give a fortune for a new set of makeup and skincare. Simply couldn’t afford it.

My version of pregnancy skincare
So with all being said, here is a list of affordable pregnancy skincare products. I’ve used them while pregnant, but of them, I started using them after pregnancy while breastfeeding.
These were some of my favorite skincare products that I probably won’t stop using, that’s how much I love them.
For your convenience, I also categorized and listed them under the main steps of a normal care routine.

Homemade Olive Oil Makeup Remover
This is just olive oil mixed with water – all in a spray bottle. Add 1 part olive oil to 3 parts water.
2. Scrub
3. Toner
4. Moisturizer

Skincare During Pregnancy for your hair
1. Shampoo & conditioner
2. Mask
Homemade hair masks
3. Styling products
No styling products are safe for pregnancy use. So I was extremely disappointed because I couldn’t use my Batiste anymore. It’s a total lifesaver if you have an oily scalp. The substitution I’ve found is baby powder. It’s perfect. If you’ve never heard of this, you should definitely give it a go.
later edit: I found a pregnancy-safe dry shampoo from MoroccanOil
4. Hair dye
Not recommended to be used in pregnancy, but I still dyed my hair twice in nine months. Don’t judge, please.
Skincare During Pregnancy for your body
1. Body wash & scrub
- Bioderma Atoderm Shower Gel
- Regular soap
- Plain Homemade sugar coffee body scrub
